Learning About Conceptual and Cognitive Development
According to Jean Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development, a child’s knowledge is composed of schema— basic knowledge used to organize past experiences and serves as a foundation for understanding new ones. Schemas are then constantly modified by two complementary processes called assimilation and accommodation.
Assimilation the process of taking in new information and incorporating it into an existing schema; videlicet, children incorporate their recent experiences into the things they already know, helping them understand things better. But when a schema changes to accommodate new knowledge, this is now called accommodation.
Child care providers see the balance of assimilation and accommodation as a vital tool in providing early childhood education as it allows the children to experience holistic cognitive development.
