How to Successfully Raise a Bilingual Child

What are the best ways to help our child learn better? How can bilingualism help them learn faster compared to other kids? These questions often bother our minds as we are not quite sure whether exposing our child to a bilingual environment really matters than just sending them to a plain daycare center. Well, studies show that a bilingual has an improved cognitive ability as they can learn faster compared to people who can only speak one language. Decide your language!
Of course, we do not want to leave our children dazed and confused about what language to speak. Thus, it is best to talk with the whole family and decide which language should be spoken at home and the language to be spoken in a formal setting. It is important that you identify the major language that is spoken in your community, workplace, and school. You also have to know the minority language and agree whether you should use it at home or even outside.

Identify the type of proficiency you want to achieve
As parents, we want what is best for our child. This includes making them learn more than one language. However, in the course of learning, we must also identify to what extent we want our children to learn. Do we want them to be fluent in the second language? Do we want them to focus more on reading and writing alone? These are the basic questions that you need to answer before you embark on the journey of language learning.

Be smart with your strategy
If you are personally facilitating your child’s improvement on the second language, then we recommend that you create a strategy. First, you must meet the core requirements for it. One, your child must be exposed to the language frequently. Then, your child must see the need to learn for such language. If you are a native Spanish speaker who is trying to learn English,you probably see the need to learn the second language.

Some of the common approaches suggested by are:

  • One person, One language method- in this method, each parent speaks a particular language to the child. The father could talk to the child in Spanish and the mother could use English in talking to the child.
  • Minority language at home- in this strategy, both parents are going to use their first language at home, while the second language will be learned from the community.

There is no preferred strategy, you can choose the one you think is more effective to you.

Being able to learn and adapt to more than one languages is a big achievement. Although this could be challenging, in the long run, you will see how this could be useful when your child starts to look for a job or travel to different places. This could also greatly facilitate their learning abilities.
